Renate Altmann

Renate Altmann was born in Berlin in 1932. She came to England as a young child, fleeing Nazi Germany months before the outbreak of the Second World War. Many of her relatives were not as fortunate, and their loss can be felt in the yearning for security and familial unity expressed in her work. All her life, Renate has been a lover of art and has studied it in all its forms and applications. She has worked in fashion design, jewellery making, oil painting and ceramics, but her main passion has always been Sculpture, which she studied at the H.G.S. Institute in London, under Howard Bate, Ian Walters, Len Wilshaw and John Brown, and was awarded “Student of the Year”. She works extensively in bronze, terra cotta, wood, stone and various metals. Her bronzes are sculpted with deep feeling, reflecting the experiences of her past and her ever-positive outlook on the future. They are mainly expressed in representational abstract and executed in different coloured patinas and polished bronze. Renate Altmann has exhibited for over 30 years in Galleries spanning three continents. She now lives in North London and enjoys spending time with her two daughters, five grand-children and two great-granddaughters. In spite of the many losses she has faced in life she enjoys looking to the future and continuing to pursue her passions.
