Boats at Porthleven

Porthleven in Cornwall exudes Cornish charm and tradition. It is set in the middle of a huge sweeping bay with a beautiful sandy beach. Porthleven also has arguably the most impressive harbour in Cornwall, being constructed during Napoleonic times with the aid of French prisoners of war. Small fishing boats land their daily catch in Porthleven, much of which is sold in Porthlevens’ cafes and restaurants.

The main building in this painting, The Lugger, is one such restaurant. It stands across the road from the slipway to the harbour where small boats are hauled up out of the water. On the day Shirley photographed this image, there were several
upturned rowing boats but she has used her artistic license to turn a couple of them over and add a bright splash of colour which really catches your eye.

This high quality giclee print is mounted (mount size 40.6 x 50.8cm) and will fit a standard readymade 16″ x 20″ frame.

Shirley Netherton

I am a Cornish artist who has spent many years developing my unique style of painting with acrylics so that today my work is instantly recognisable. I feel lucky that the hobbies which I enjoy in my free time contribute towards my intense enthusiasm for painting. The photographs I take whilst walking and kayaking become the reference material for my work. I am so fortunate to live in such a beautiful county, surrounded by the sea with so many inland waterways - truly inspirational.
