Charcoal study #20

After years of frustration trying to free up my painting style when using my photos as a reference, I decided to start doing charcoal studies and use my imagination.

I really enjoy the results of mark making using charcoal and charcoal powder allowing more freedom and emotion in all of my work as a result of this decision.

Colin Slater

Colin Slater was born and raised in the North East. He studied model making at college and went on to work as an Architectural Model maker for 10 years. Colin is largely self taught although he would credit his father for his love of art from an early age. “I came home one day to find a drawing of his on the table and I was amazed – it was the first I knew of art. . . his work still amazes me today.” His artistic career now affords him the perfect work/life balance, working from a small home studio which is never quiet – between the background music and his son’s desire to draw whatever Dad's painting. Working mostly in Acrylics Colin enjoys the process as much as the final piece, initially working quickly and freely to establish the composition and key contrasts before fine tuning to get a sense of atmosphere.
