A really splendid way to see the maze of creeks around the River Fal is by kayak or small boat on a reasonably high tide. Equally enjoyable though, for those who do not have access to, or the wish to go boating, can be circular walks. Starting from the remains of the church at Old Kea near Truro, one can walk to Halwyn, and then alongside Cowlands Creek to Coombe, and back via Higher Lanner. This walk gives splendid views of the Fal and a good view of Lamouth Creek (the title of another of Shirley’s paintings) also opens up. It was a still summers day when Shirley walked along this circular route and took the photograph which inspired this painting.
The sky is a beautiful light blue with gentle, swollen clouds. Cowlands Creek winds away through the banks of trees to the far distant fields. In the foreground sits an orange boat – there is no wind – no ripples disturb its reflection.
This high quality giclee print is mounted (mount size 40.6 x 50.8cm) and will fit a standard readymade 16″ x 20″ frame.
