In the Fibonacci sequence the next number is the sum of the previous two numbers. So it begins 0 1 1 2 3 5 8 13……. It regularly occurs in nature. For example in the diameter of consecutive turns of a snail shell.
This work illustrates this as a sequence of turned beech spheres of 1, 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8cm diameter. In addition to which the distance between the spheres is also in the sequence 1, 1, 2, 3 and 5 cm. These are mounted on a 2.5cm x 11cm (maximum) x 35 cm tapered English oak plinth. The piece weighs 0.75kg.
It is the work of David Boyd FRSC, who is a scientist specialising in scientific and geometric artworks.
