Natural Wood Flame

I found the grain of this piece of tulip wood to nice to colour over so left it a natural wood flame by using a clear polish and then waxed. The base is Bath stone and the sculpture is held in place by a strong screw.

Since childhood I have loved making things and after first trying sculpture at school I became hooked, then, during my art college years, that interest evolved into a passion. To me creating sculpture is a privilege, from the earliest sketches and exploration of an idea, right through to a finished piece of work, I feel so fortunate to be fulfilling my natural creativity. Despite using many mediums, sculpting wood is simply my favourite. Every piece of timber has different characteristics and therefore must be respected, if rushed or forced when worked it can so easily end up as something destined for the fireplace. But if nurtured correctly, properly seasoned, carefully crafted, then patiently finished, it can become something uniquely beautiful and wonderful. My aim when sculpting is to capture the essence and movement of a subject matter. In effect I begin with an image and take away detail until an uncomplicated, simplistic line drawing is left, my start point. However once the physical work begins, and as the piece progresses that original design becomes less important and so ultimately I really just follow my instincts and sculpt freely. More than once I have started with one design and finished with something completely different! But to me the finished sculpture is all important.
