Lisa Butcher
Lisa Butcher I have developed my approach to printmaking over the last 10 years, and have broken away from traditional methods of silkscreen. My most recent work produced this year demonstrates a move towards painting and digital print. Allowing myself to escape entirely into the process of drawing itself and capturing a simple drawing without the process of correction and merely allowing the natural form to be captured through the practice of drawing from direct observation and intuitive mark making. It is this initial use of line that I feel is the essence and starting point of my work. These drawing are then explored through my imagination and combined with the play of shape and colour. Being impatient and industrious I felt frustrated by the print process, as I like to have several pieces on the go at the same time and I became excited by using my printmaking methods into painting and digital print in order to create varied compositions. What I continued to explore and be excited about it centered around the breaking down of an image purely into line and shape and they re simulating these together as an aesthetic image allowing both line and shape to take on their own characteristics by deliberately not registering the two. This body of work has been largely influenced by my parent’s garden in Wales, near Snowdonia and the gardens of Hampton court, near my home in Surrey.
