St Michael’s Mount

St Michael’s Mount is located some 3 miles east of Penzance and is one of the treasures of Cornwall. Set on an island a few hundred yards off-shore from the ancient town of Marazion and in the heart of Mounts Bay, the castle – now maintained by the National Trust – has for centuries been the home of the St Aubyn family. Originally, the building was a Benedictine Priory which had religious links with the equally famous Mont St Michel in Normandy, France. Subsequently, it became a fortified castle which saw action during the English Civil War and today still has a battery of cannon.

The island served as a major port in earlier times and is thought to be the island of Ictis which was the centre for the export of Cornish tin and copper to the Greeks and Romans in pre-historic times. Today, the Island and Castle are open to the public every weekday and most weekends during the summer and on a limited basis during the colder months.

In this painting, the mount takes centre stage with its imposing building perched on the top of a mass of rocks, bushes and trees. The mouth of the harbour can be seen which is where the local fishermen take visitors to the island at high tide – at low tide they are able to walk across the granite causeway. Shirley has used the same pastel colours as another of her works which was painted at the same time – Mounts Bay.

This high quality giclee print is mounted (mount size 400 x 400 mm) and will fit a standard readymade frame.

Shirley Netherton

I am a Cornish artist who has spent many years developing my unique style of painting with acrylics so that today my work is instantly recognisable. I feel lucky that the hobbies which I enjoy in my free time contribute towards my intense enthusiasm for painting. The photographs I take whilst walking and kayaking become the reference material for my work. I am so fortunate to live in such a beautiful county, surrounded by the sea with so many inland waterways - truly inspirational.
