Alan Birchall

Inspired by mainly Japanese ceramics and the natural world, I make mainly individual pieces that reflect both Oriental styles and the natural origins of the materials I use.  I combine throwing, hand-building and carving in the creation of my pieces which have an Oriental feel about them. The ash glazes give a tactile and rustic appearance to the pots that beckon the viewer to hold and touch them. Firing with a naked flame ensures an endless variety in the finished surfaces.
