Claire McKnight

I spent a lot of my childhood by the sea and walking on chalk hills. These two things are lodged firmly in my mind and influence me constantly. That is not to say that I paint hills and sea but more the idea of freedom that they conjure up that sneaks into my work. Another strong influence has been Australia where I lived for 18 months; my colours changed dramatically and remain pretty bright-hopefully not garish!
I prefer to use my imagination and ‘borrow’ images from poetry and music. I love working in pen and ink as it gives me great scope for invention and fun and is a good contrast to what I would term my more serious work which is mainly acrylic. I also make large ceramic vessels and various stained glass pieces from windows to elaborate hinged boxes but my real love will always be painting.
