Jo Ellis

I was born in Hong Kong and moved to the United Kingdom in 1970. I have been travelling around the world ever since, painting and exhibiting while living in New Zealand, Sudan, Tanzania, Pakistan, South Korea, Egypt and Bosnia & Herzegovina. I am now living in London with my family. I studied traditional Chinese painting in Hong Kong which I developed during four years in Korea. I also studied fine art and design in London. As an illustrator and painter I like drawing in traditional Chinese ink which I  grind from a  inkstick on stone  to create the right degree of thickness and shade. I then apply the ink onto a single or multi-layered rice paper. I also love painting with acrylic on canvas or recycle cardboard to create texture. Mixing both eastern and western techniques and styles often results in unusual interpretation of  familiar subject matter. I have been lucky enough to spend most of my life travelling around the world and living in so many diverse places.  This experience has had a strong influence on my outlook on life which I try to express in differing styles of my work. I have held solo exhibitions in Seoul, Cairo, Alexandria, Sarajevo, Florida, New York and  group exhibitions in London at the Mall Gallery, Alexander Llewellyn Gallery. Chelsea Old Town Hall,  Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Banqueting House, Orleans House Gallery, The Stable Gallery, Riverside Gallery at Richmond Town Hall, Kingston Museum, The Fountain Gallery and The Lightbox Gallery. In year 2000 I was chosen to participate in the Channel 4 programme Watercolour Challenge reaching the semi-final.
